About the Our Sun

About Our Sun Header

Our Sun is a star. It is the centre of our solar system. Our Solar System is made up of the sun, planets, moons, asteroids, comets & dwarf planets. The Sun is the source of all life on our planet. It provides the energy we need to live & grow. Without it, we simply wouldn't exist. It's no wonder that ancient civilisations worshiped & mapped it's movements. We have been studying it for years & this is what we now know ...

The Sun is ....

  • 99.88% of all mass in our solar system
  • 9 times wider than the Earth
  • 330,000 times heavier than the Earth
  • Our Sun is a relatively small Star
  • We have found stars upto 1000 times larger in the Universe

The Sun is made of gas

  • About 70% hydrogen
  • 28% helium (like you get in balloons) &
  • 2% other stuff

The Sun's massive size holds all the other planets in the solar system by the force of Gravity

Gravity
Is the force that pulls smaller objects towards larger objects. Everything in the Universe is affected by it.  It is what makes an object fall to the floor when you drop it. It is also what makes the planets orbit the Sun.

The Sun's energy, that we feel as warmth & see as light, keeps everything on
our planet alive. Without it there would be no life on Earth. Every second the sun produces one million times the power used by the USA in one year.
